Podcast Spotlight: Spitball

Have you wanted to start a business or new entrepreneurial endeavor but feel like you just haven’t found the right idea yet? The Spitball podcast has you covered.

This show blends comedy with tech and business ideas to deliver new startup pitches to listeners every episode. The best part?: Any idea mentioned on the show is free for listeners to use in whatever way it inspires them.

Spitball: An Entire Podcast of Free Startup Ideas

In each episode of Spitball, the show’s three hosts—Scott Brandonisio, Russell Fyfe, and Leo Herzog—chat with a guest on the show and pitch a tech product or startup idea that they wish existed. Basically, each episode is a bundle of free startup ideas for entrepreneurs and startup investors to snatch up.

“My co-host was always doing this to me organically and it’s always a fun conversation,” says co-host Leo Herzog. “Plus, this is an opportunity to connect with new and old friends and have a fun conversation.”

Among other startup ideas the Spitball guys have pitched are that of fly-swatting clothes, cabinets that are dishwashers, Tinder for restaurants, and a single sock store.

“There isn’t anything quite like our show,” says Herzog. “It’s entrepreneurship junk food. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, yet still tries to find angles and enhancements on each idea.”

Behind the Scenes: Making Spitball

Herzog wears many hats as part of the Spitball team: Not only is he one of the show’s three hosts, but he also acts as a producer, writer, editor, publisher, and website coder for the podcast.

Spitball is hosted on Castopod, using Riverside to record all three hosts and each episode’s guest remotely. The hosts are fans of the Samson Q2U and Audio Technica AT2020USB-X dynamic and condenser mics, respectively. They primarily rely on Audacity for episode editing, with some occasional Auphonic AI repair used for guests.

“I love the Web 1.0 nature of podcasts,” Herzog says. “There’s no one single gatekeeper company, they’re compatible everywhere, they’re built on basic internet technology building blocks, and there are a million choices for creating, hosting, and listening. That rules. It’s the last remaining relic of the old, pre-algorithmic, pre-social-media internet.”

What’s Ahead on Spitball?

Looking to the future, Herzog says the Spitball team is aiming to slowly continue to grow the podcast while keeping it fun for everyone involved:

“No monetary or sponsor goals,” he says. “I just love the podcasting ecosystem and want to contribute.”
